đź“ş Last Monday we were featured on EenVandaag in a segment about a topic that is becoming increasingly important: the emerging trade war between major countries. But what does that have to do with metal? And why is this important for the Netherlands?

What is happening?
The United States has decided to charge extra taxes on the import of important metals such as aluminum and copper. This means that these raw materials become more expensive if you source them from abroad.
The Netherlands is highly dependent on other countries for these kinds of materials. We have few raw materials ourselves but use them a lot. At the same time, we often do not handle old metals carefully here in the Netherlands. They come from discarded airplanes, devices, or machines and too often disappear without being properly processed.
That is a shame, because these materials are still very valuable.
What does this mean for the Netherlands?
If we waste our own metals, we have to buy even more from other countries. And if those countries change the rules or raise prices, we suffer the consequences. We make ourselves vulnerable.
By recycling well, we can extract more value from our own waste. This way we keep control over what we need and become less dependent on others.
